Box Office: Weekend Review

February 5-7

For those of you wondering why the delay on the Box Office review, I was just too tired last night after watching “Dear John” 12 times this weekend so it could knock off “Avatar”. Okay, we all know that is not true. I was actually enjoying a long relaxing day watching the Super Bowl festivities, and cleaning my computer of a virus. (sidenote: it disgust me that people have nothing better to do than waste people’s time, energy and resources creating these viruses)

Who knew Tatum could take down Avatar without his excellerator suite.

Regarding the weekend at the Box Office, “Avatar” finally fell all the way to number two, while the media is still buzzing about it being the number one grossing movie of all time. But please remember – as discussed here several times – that we all need perspective. “Avatar” is benefiting from inflated ticket prices compared to older movies and the 3-D glasses jack the price even more. Why do you think other distributors are converting movies to 3-D? If you compare the number of tickets sold, “Avatar” is no where close to the top of the all time list. So everyone please take a deep breath.

Box Office Mojo is reporting that “Dear John” finished number one this weekend with a stronger than expected opening. “Dear John” stars Channing Tatum (“G.I. Joe”) and Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia!”). Tatum has put together a couple of good box office movies of late. Let me recommend one of his earlier movies, “Coach Carter” (Samuel L. Jackson). If you have not seen it, be sure to check it out.

Bring back the hair Jon. It is your only hope.

Jon Travolta’s new movie, “From Paris with Love”, opened with a disappointing $8 million weekend. I am not surprised, as Travolta does not draw audiences like he once did. Does JT still have “it”? I am not sure, but perhaps he is like Sampson, and his hair is the source of his strength. If so, uh-oh.

Still in the top 10 (#10) is Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes”, which has now eclipsed the $200 million mark. It is now safe to say that RDJ is a major player again in Hollywood and can carry a movie to big Box Office numbers.

Movies of note next weekend include “The Wolfman” and “Valentine’s Day”. What a pair of movies to open Valentine’s weekend. Every guy will want to see “The Wolfman” (if they are not tired of it from the zillion commercials during the Super Bowl), while his lady is going to drag him to “Valentine’s Day” (staring…everyone). Well, at least you can go buy a Dodge Charger, might make you feel better (see below).

VIDEO: How the guy who wants to watch “The Wolfman” feels after seeing “Valentine’s Day”…if he buys a Dodge.

If you were not watching the Super Bowl, or ran to the bathroom or fridge every commercial break, here is the Super Bowl ad for “The Wolfman”.

Be sure to check back next week to see if “The Wolfman” was able to conquer cupid…I doubt it.

  1. [...] Last week I said it would be hard to bring down cupid on Valentine’s weekend, and I was right. Valentine’s Day opened to what would become the biggest President’s Day weekend ever, according to Box Office Mojo. The Friday through Sunday total for Valentine’s Day was just over $56 million. Even with horrible reviews (a dismal 16% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes), Valentine’s Day was able to capitalize on those looking for a night out with their sweet heart. The Wolfman and Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief both had good opening weekends as well, finishing second and third respectively. Falling all the way to number 5 was last week’s winner, Dear John. [...]
